Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi - Gita Jayanti

Gita Jayanti is the birthday of Bhagvad Gita,

It is celebrated on the Shukla Ekadasi, 11th day of the waxing moon of Margashirsha month (November-December).

The "Bhagavad Gita" was revealed to Arjuna by Sri Krishna  in the battlefield of Kurukshetra (in present day Haryana, India). Krishna told Arjuna to act according to his dharma.

A summary of Bhagavad Gita.

No body in the universe can stop activity. Every individual keeps doing some thing or other activity. Every individual has the right to do a proper activity after due thinking, but results may not happen as expected as the rest of the world acts in its own way and it is not under the control of one man. So a man should not get attached too much to the results of any particular action. But he has to keep acting according to his knowledge of dharma. In the Bhagavadgita, Krishna described Jnana Yoga that gives knowledge to one to make sense of the world. Raja Yoga which is doing great things in this world which are not within the abilities of many people. Karma yoga is doing activities that one has to do in a natural way as he comes across in his life. Bhakti yoga is great devotion to God or Jnana and Raja yogis or even karma yogis.  Bhakti yoga talks of willingness to follow, waiting for directions and implementing the directions like a karma yogi. Hanuman is considered a bhakta, even though he is a great Raja Yogi. He did many great adventures. But he did them on the directions of his object of devotion Shri Rama.

War in High Himalaya: The Indian Army in Crisis, 1962

D. K. Palit
C. Hurst & Co. Publishers, 01-Jan-1991 -  450 pages

The circumstances attending the disastrous campaign that followed the Chinese invasion of India's Himalayan borders have never been clearly understood. Even today, some three decades after the ceasefire of November 1962, very little official information has been made available to the public or the press about that brief but traumatic episode.

The author is Director of Military Operations at Army Headquarters during that fateful period and he both witnessed and took part in the processes through which government policies were formulated and the decision taken to go to war against the Chinese, in circumstances that must have indicated inevitable catastrophe.

General Palit describes with refreshing candour the ad hoc nature of the decision-making apparatus at prime ministerial and cabinet levels, the lack of any semblance of coordinated staff analyses, the over-reach of government into the responsibilities of the military, and the quiescence of the latter in permitting it. He is uninhibited in recording facts as he saw them and the opinions he held at the time, though always careful to distinguish between that and hind-sight rationalization. While commenting on the actions of others the author is also frankly and disarmingly self-critical. In an attempt to explain the historical causes for the almost total lack of inter-face between the government and the military, a leitmotiv that runs through the narrative, the author has made an interesting analysis of the ethos of the Indian Army as it has developed during the British-Indian period, an inheritance from the colonial past that remained unchanged despite forty-five years of independence. In a fascinating postscript the author demonstrates that this malfunctioning of the government's national security system continues to the present day.

Battle of Rezang La - Article by me under preparation

Battle of Rezang La - India - China War 1962

One spot, where our soldiers fought back, and repelled, the Chinese incursions was at Rezang La near Chushul, in the Himalayan heights. On November 18, 1962, 114 soldiers of the 13th Kumaon fought till the last man, and last bullet, in sub-zero temperatures, to beat back the huge Chinese army.

A grateful nation acknowledged their valour by posthumously conferring the Param Vir Chakra on Major Shaitan Singh.

114 soldiers of the 13th Kumaon had to offer their supreme sacrifice fighting till the 'last man and last bullet' in sub-zero temperature (minus 15 degrees Celsius) at Rezang La on November 18, 1962.
