National Press Day

1713 - Chhatrapati Shahu appointed Balaji Vishwanath as 'Peshwa'
1835 - Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. She was named Manikarnika and was called 'Manu'.

1860 - Steam Ship S.S.Truno sailed into Durban, Natal with 342 Indians onboard who went to South Africa for working there.

1908 - Bommi Narsingh Reddy, famous film story writer, was born.
1958 - India and U.S.S.R. sign trade agreement to exchange Soviet industrial and agricultural equipment for farm commodities at Moscow.
1962 - Chinese troops launch a major offensive against India.
1966 - Press Council of India was established (National Press Day)
